In this Psalm David is crying out to the Lord and asking for forgiveness because he had just had an affair with Bathsheeba. He is asking the Lord to have mercy upon him and blot out his sins. He knew that he had sinned against GOD and his sins were before him. David acknowledges that GOD is right in judging him because he knows right from wrong and the Lord has taught him wisdom and truth. David pours out his heart and says Lord create in me a clean heart and renew a right spirit within me.
Many can relate to this scripture because we have all fallen short of GODs glory. Paul said it best "For what I want to do, I do not do, but what I hate, I do. For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do, this, I keep on doing. Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me.
So I understand David when he was really hard on himself because I too have disappointed GOD by operating in my mess. I knowingly did what I shouldn't have done. I have heard some people say if you are going to sin you better go out in a Cadillac. In other words, if you are going to sin, sin big, the devil is a liar. Once you come to yourself you better stop, repent and quickly get it right.
GOD is a merciful and a gracious GOD who is a GOD of another chance. And allows us to come boldly before the throne of grace and find mercy in the time of trouble. Know this that GOD always makes a way of escape and provides a life option. Choose life.
Deep in sorrow David cries to the Lord not to cast His presence away from Him and do not take His Holy Spirit from him. Have you done something and afterwards you feel so bad that you have let GOD down that you cry Lord don't leave me because you feel like surely GOD can't stay around me. Have you felt like your sin was so bad that The very One, the Holy Spirit that leads you to all truth have vacated. And you plead with GOD don't leave. GOD said that He will never leave you nor forsake you.
There is a song that Natalie Grant sings: There is nothing too dirty that GOD can't make worthy. He will wash you in mercy and you will be made clean. GOD will do it.
Our GOD is a GOD of another chance and allows us grace space to get it right. He will forgive you of your sins and He will throw your sins as far as the east is from the west. Our GOD a healer, way maker, forgiver and a lover of our soul.
Purge me with hyssop and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. Psalms 51:12
1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. 3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. 4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight; so you are right in your verdict and justified when you judge. 5 Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me. 6 Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb; you taught me wisdom in that secret place. 7 Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. 8 Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice. 9 Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity. 10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. 11 Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. 12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. 13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways, so that sinners will turn back to you. 14 Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God, you who are God my Savior, and my tongue will sing of your righteousness. 15 Open my lips, Lord, and my mouth will declare your praise. 16 You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. 17 My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise. 18 May it please you to prosper Zion, to build up the walls of Jerusalem. 19 Then you will delight in the sacrifices of the righteous, in burnt offerings offered whole; then bulls will be offered on your altar.
